Kippilaw Mains, Bowden

A major extension to an existing cottage to provide a new lounge, entrance hall and master bedroom with en-suite shower, which has transformed the clients’ property, taking full advantage of spectacular views to the south. Another floor was added making the most of the outlook, and providing access to a south roof terrace. East and north elevations are traditional in appearance to relate to the existing farm buildings adjacent, with pitched slate roof and natural sandstone walls, while the south elevation relates to the previous modernist extension with its large areas of glazing and timber cladding.

A mechanical heat recovery system has been installed in both the extension and the older part of the house, while a large solar panel serves the hot water and central heating system. The stone floor in the lounge acts as a heat store for passive solar gain through the large windows on the south elevation.
