Old Cultra Road, Holywood

This new house was designed for a secluded backland site in a residential suburb of Belfast. As the site has limited outlook due to the surrounding landscape, the design turns this and the solar orientation to advantage to create a private south-facing courtyard garden, framed by the living accommodation which looks out onto this space. Pop-out windows focus on some distant views. Timber cladding provides a warm and tactile material within the garden courtyard, while the entrance courtyard by contrast is a semi-formal space with a protective wall in natural coursed rubble stonework.

Adopting Passivhaus principles, the design utilises a combination of solar gain, mechanical heat recovery and underfloor heating with a modern highly efficient boiler. Solar panels are proposed for water heating along with a grey water recycling system.
