Legars Farm, Hume

This new house for a retired farmer enjoys dramatic views to the Cheviot Hills to the south and Hume Castle to the north. The contemporary design has its roots in the traditional buildings of the Berwickshire countryside, yet the ground floor is open-plan and all areas are flooded with natural light.

The house is extremely energy efficient and benefits from the inclusion of a ground source heat pump with a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system. Large areas of glass on the south elevation provide passive solar gain.

External finishes are restricted to a simple palette of colours and textures with slate and lead, pale render, and blue/grey timber cladding and windows.

The project was winner of Scottish Borders Council’s Architectural Award for Rural New Build 2011.
