Mill Cottage, Newstead

This new house within the conservation village of Newstead was built on the site of a former corn mill using reclaimed materials, including re-use of the old millstone to form the fireplace hearth.

The design takes full advantage of the site’s elevated position and the fine views across the Tweed Valley.

While the interior is highly contemporary in design with an open plan layout and a high ceiling expressing the roof pitches, the exterior is very much in keeping with the village vernacular, using natural slate for the roof, red sandstone, coursed rubble whinstone and render for the walls, and timber windows and doors. Careful design and detailing has ensured that the new building makes a positive contribution to the conservation area.
