Iona Abbey

After an extensive programme of refurbishment during the late 20th Century, the Category A listed Abbey’s heating system was to be modernised to enable the 800 year old building to meet modern sustainability targets.

The phased works for Historic Scotland included installation of a water source heat pump with multi-electric boiler replacements and new thermal stores.

The island location required careful consideration of suitable materials and plant and their subsequent manoeuvrability on site, while the works had to be managed to ensure safe separation from the local island community and numerous visitors.  The works also were carried out with care to protect the ecclesiastically and historically important structure.
